Transfering a Design
There are lots of ways to transfer designs, and I'll add more  here, but these two are really easy.

Light Box
I  do have a small light box, but normally  use a  home made one to transfer designs.

Tape your design  to a window pane with masking tape, ensuring it's flat. Tape your fabric over the top, and then carefully trace the design. This can make your arms ache a bit,  (especially if you are 'vertically challenged', like me!) so do be sure you get it at a comfortable height. I like to use a waterproof pen with a fine nib - but if you are worried about your stitches showing you can  use an embroidery transfer pencil.

Printing/ironing
If you use a laser printer, you can transfer an image by ironing your printed sheet onto suitable fabric. I've found cotton with a reasonably high thread count which makes it very smooth  is the most receptive to this process. I have done this  several times and it does work, but - please  bear in mind you need  a lot of heat and a lot of patience. You'll get a silvery image appearing,  eventually.

Oh,  and the image will be reversed, so you need to reverse it if you want it the right way around.  It won't work with an ink jet printer,  as the ink doesn't react to heat in the same way. It's worth a try for small designs - but I wouldn't recommend using it it you are embroidering a table cloth!
